Since October 5, 2021, Microsoft has been widely rolling out Windows 11 through Windows updates.
Can I go ahead with the upgrade without any worries? What will Windows 11 offer me? In this article, we’ll try to provide some answers.
What about Windows 10?
Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 10 and Windows 11 will coexist. Windows 10 will continue to be supported by the technical teams and will continue to receive updates. According to Microsoft, support for Windows 10 will continue through 2025.
Is the migration free?
The upgrade from Windows 10 Home or Pro will indeed be FREE and available through Windows Update. It remains a licensed product that must be purchased for a new installation (on a new computer).
The Enterprise and Education editions, meanwhile, will be available as updates through Software Assurance.
Are all the machines in my fleet compatible?
- DirectX 12 support is REQUIRED. Desktop computers can be upgraded by adding a graphics card (provided they meet the other specifications), but forget about laptops that are more than 4 years old!
- TPM 2.0 protection system is REQUIRED. This technology was introduced in 2016 (though not on all computers).
- Your computer’s processor must be a recent model; you can find a list of compatible processors here:
Is there a risk of incompatibility with the applications used at my company?
If your application is currently running on Windows 10, it should work on Windows 11. Please note that we are indeed using the conditional tense. Microsoft based Windows 11 on the same kernel as Windows 10, so they share the same foundation. We strongly advise companies to check with the various vendors of the business applications they use to confirm whether these applications will continue to function or if an update will be necessary.
